Today, I'd like to take the opportunity to cover the absolute basics in beat production. By now I'm hoping you know that you should STAY AWAY FROM:
*ONLINE ONLY beat makers: They use MP3's, and tend to force you to login to their website/members (every single time) area to use the software. SILLY! Why would you pay to go make mp3 beats online lol.
What if their site goes down? Or your internet connection boots you for a while... Also - for the most part, the online only beatmakers tend to give you ONE bar to loop. That's it, one bar, 16 sounds, and export as another mp3 (third generation sounds at this point, and there is NO WAY anyone serious about music is going to want anything to do with it)...
*PLUGIN HAPPY: Once you understand the basics, and have a nice sized budget, you may move towards the bigger DAW's like Cubase or Protools, however be prepared to always be on the hunt for new VST's (VST = Virtual instruments, samplers, effects units, standalone sound generators etc.). You'll also have to be prepared to invest in a half decent sound card (like M-audio or Motu - not like a soundblaster pro lol). This is what will greatly improve or eliminate any latency issues (you press your keyboard, but it's delayed, records delayed, or too early, and your midi patterns become a mess and not on time).
*THE NITTY GRITTY SUMMED UP: What you need, is basically 3 things in your beat making software to have it considered 'sellable, useable, broadcast quality, etc..

Make sure the beat maker USES .wav files at least at 44.1 stereo 16 bit. This way, when you mixdown and export your final, you are also exporting a high quality 44.1 stereo 16bit master .wav file as well - lossless quality! Then you can make mp3 versions from THAT master.

Make sure your beatmaker can do more than just one bar. This means that you can grow your bar count and timeline, and at least make a verse/chorus etc. (16/32 bars minimum...).

Make sure your music maker has the ability to parse new samples and your own sounds into it. This means that you can import your own drum kits, and your own keyboard categories on the fly with little effort.
